What is PREA 101?

PREA 101 is an online course designed to train and guide learners as they understand and implement the PREA Standards. Participation in PREA 101 is provided free of charge to participants.

Key Features and Learning Objectives

 Upon successful completion of the course, learners will be able to: 
  1. Describe the history of the Prison Rape Elimination Act and discuss the importance of ensuring sexual safety in confinement.
  2. Demonstrate foundational knowledge of the PREA Standards.
  3. Identify key PREA-related resources provided by the PREA Resource Center.
  4. Identify and discuss both the interconnectedness and the distinctiveness of the PREA Standards.
  5. Analyze PREA implementation efforts and engage in action planning and next steps for your facility or agency.

Course Requirements and Schedule

PREA 101 is scheduled to begin on Monday, August 30, 2021 and end on Friday, December 17, 2021 and require approximately 4 hours per week of engagement from the learner.

Each week learners will be expected to complete assigned readings, participate in an online discussion board, and complete any associated eLearning content.

On most weeks of the course, participants will have the opportunity to engage in office hours with PREA faculty to discuss standard-specific questions or concerns.

Full participation in the course requires that learners have access to a computer with high-speed internet and either computer speakers and a functioning microphone or a phone line.

Your registration confirms your commitment to participate in PREA 101.  This course is not designed to certify you as a DOJ PREA-certified auditor and will not result in any kind of certification or license.
