In collaboration with the PREA Management Office (PMO) in the Bureau of Justice Assistance at the U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ), the National PREA Resource Center (PRC) is excited to announce the Field Training Program (FTP) for Certified PREA Auditors. This is a unique opportunity for DOJ-certified PREA auditors to participate in a “mock” or “practice” PREA audit to hone their skills in a supportive environment at a confinement facility selected by the PMO and the PRC.

Successful participation in the existing FTP became a PREA auditor certification requirement in July 2017. This new Certified PREA Auditor FTP is targeting auditors who were certified by DOJ before the July 2017 training and did not have an opportunity to participate in the FTP.

The goals of the Certified PREA Auditor FTP are to strengthen PREA auditing skills, improve understanding of the PREA Standards, increase experience with the PREA auditing process and methodology prescribed in the PREA Standards and the PREA Auditor Handbook, and strengthen knowledge about existing PREA auditing tools and resources. Subject matter experts from the PRC will provide coaching and mentoring throughout the program.

The FTP is delivered in three components over 19 weeks. Successful applicants are expected to participate in all parts of it. The onsite week is September 22-27, 2024.

The training consists of:
  • Approximately 40-45 hours of work during the 8-week pre-onsite phase (averaging 4-5 hours per week),

  • A minimum of 55 “working hours” during the onsite week at the selected confinement facility, and

  • 40-45 hours during the 10-week post-onsite phase (averaging 4-5 hours per week).

Prior to applying, interested auditors, including those who are employees of state, local, or tribal governmental agencies, are encouraged to discuss these time requirements and their implications with their supervisors and colleagues.

The auditors who are selected may be eligible for reimbursement up to $2,000 from the PRC for travel, lodging, meals, and other expenses, consistent with federal per diem guidelines. If selected, additional details about eligibility for reimbursement will be provided. Please note that federal funding requirements do not allow the PRC to reimburse participants who are employed by federal agencies, including the Department of Homeland Security and the Bureau of Prisons.

Please fill out the application on the following pages and submit it following the instruction in the application. Be sure to complete all items marked with an asterisk.
